AFRICAN QUEEN BOAT MODEL
The
African Queen is a boat starred in a famous 1951
British–American adventure film adapted from the 1935
novel by C. S. Forester. The film stars Humphrey Bogart
(who won the Academy Award for Best Actor – his only
Oscar) and Katharine Hepburn and directed by John
Huston.
Before the movie, the African Queen boat
had been used to shuttle
cargo, missionaries and hunting parties across the
Victoria Nile and Lake Albert which was located on the
border between the Belgian Congo and Uganda. She was built in Lytham,
England in 1912 for the East Africa British Railways
company.
The movie was filmed in the Belgian
Congo on a tributary of the Congo River, and on
the Nile in the Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda.
the African Queen is now located in Key
Largo, Florida. After the movie,
she remained in service in Africa until 1968 when she
was brought to the United States. She has been the pride and joy of Key Largo
since 1982. On February 18, 1992, she was added to the
U.S. National Register of Historic Places, celebrated
her centennial year.
The African Queen was
selected for preservation in the United States National
Film Registry in 1994, with the Library of Congress
deeming it "culturally, historically or aesthetically
significant."
This
is the most authentic model of the
African Queen boat. It is scratch built and more
accurate than that made from a kit which is based on the
current boat in Florida. If you watch the movie again and
pay attention to the boat and you will see many things
are different--the red/white canopy is a clear example.
Our model's has more details and more accurate in many
ways. The art of making the model to look old
like in the movie is even more difficult than the task
of building the model itself. This would be a treasured
item for your collection.
